Stephen grew up in Australia listening to Pop and Rock music and spent quite a few years playing in different bands gaining performance experience. In 1998, he began a five year Jazz Drumming study at the Queensland Conservatory. In that same year, he began his career as a drum set teacher.
After graduating in 2002, with a Bmus - Specialised Performance Degree, Stephen continued to play professionally in a variety of bands playing different styles of music: Rock, Jazz, Funk and Latin. It was common to play three to six gigs per week in Australia.
In 2004, Stephen arrived in The Netherlands and began his two year Masters of Music - Latin Drumming & Percussion study, at the Rotterdams Conservatory (Codarts). He soon gained a high level of understanding and skills on Congas, Bongos, Timbales, Bata, Shekere, Pandiero, Caixia, Surdo, Ciaxixi, Cajon, Shakers and many other percussion instruments, including music from Cuba, Brazil and the Americas (North and South). During his study, and after his graduation in The Netherlands, he continued to teach, and share his vast variety of knowledge with all of his drum students.
Stephen is aware of the difficulties people can have when learning an instrument and therefore he adopts a very patient, supporting approach to everyone's learning progress. Playing music is something that ignites your inner soul, and for Stephen, being able to share that with drummers and musicians alike, is a wonderful opportunity that we should all experience.
Stephen’s performances were spread throughout Holland, and reached into Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, etc. These performances were ranging from Cafes, Bars, Clubs, Theatres, Concert Halls and Festivals.

Essentially, how room acoustics change the way drummers play and how we should adapt to the changes in space that we find ourselves in and figure out ways to record these sounds professionally.
Ben takes pride in teaching this specialisation to his students. Learning about touch, volume control and how drums can sound differently greatly benefits the development of a professional drummer.
